International photo competitions
May 4, 2019Last year, before I fell sick, I started entering some of my photos into international photography competitions. These are run by photo clubs throughout the world and are either called exhibitions or salons. After judging, the best works are generally shown in a gallery and all those that are "accepted" (ie meet a certain points cutoff) are published in a catalogue.
My previous experience was of submitting photos to be judged at my local club in Canberra so I am used to the fact that judging is highly subjective. Also tastes vary from country to country (too saturated! not saturated enough!) but I was curious about how my photos would stack up against other serious enthusiasts.
I've been happy with my results: lots of acceptances and a few ribbons as well as one medal. My best performing images have been the polar bear and cub (posted in my blog entry here) and these two:
My best rated black and white photo, though it hasn't won any awards outside of my club, is of the Remarkables on Kangaroo Island. They are a fantastic orange colour, but here I wanted to explore line and shape.
