Willy Willy (and Cows)

The power of nature

After waking up I went into the bathroom - and came face to face with a cow at the window. Some of the common herd had wandered into our yard over night. They reluctantly left when Anthony and I herded them out. After the second time this happened we started keeping the gates shut overnight.

There was a bit of wind around through the day but we were surprised to hear it suddenly pick up significantly. Then it got very loud and violent. We realised it must be a willy willy going directly over us. Looking out my window towards the road we could see its base of flying dirt and debris as it moved that direction. Unfortunately no camera was to hand and it was gone from sight quite quickly.

It cleaned the roof of the house, shed and shadehouse - which meant there was a huge mess of branches and leaves on the ground for us to clean up.
