Neist and west Skye

Our Great British Adventure

April 29, 2018

Another bright but cold day (10C before windchill). At the suggestion of our host we were headed for the Neist Point lighthouse. It was on a long side road - a single lane of bitumen the passing bays carved out periodically. We were surprised at the volume of traffic on it and speculated wildly as to possible reasons. There were certainly lots of cars and mini-busses at the end of the road.

The headland was very impressive. You arrive at the top of a cliff and can climb down steep stairs to walk across a flat bit at sea level to the monolith that the lighthouse is behind. We opted to walk along the clifftop (tricky given the mud and endless marshy ground) until we could look back at the monolith and see the lighthouse. The edge was unguarded and the cliff face sheer so you wouldn't want to lose your footing.

On the way back we stopped at Dunvegan castle, which is still the residence of the Chief of Clan MacLeod. It certainly had lots of antiquity, but didn't grab the interest of either of us. Sadly I'd forgotten about the gorgeous Fairy Pools which were a short way off our route back.
