Merry Melting Christmas

It's really summer now

December 28, 2017

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We meant to go outside at midday on the Solstice and see that we had no shadows (as the sun was directly overhead because we live on the tropic line). It's been something we've thought would be interesting for many years. Naturally, when that one day a year arrived... we forgot. Until two days later. Now we have to wait until next year. Sigh.

We had a visitor a couple of weeks before Christmas. We'd heard a noise outside and thought we'd glimpsed a feral cat in our torchlight. The next night - a Friday - I went outside to chase it off when it returned. To my immense surprise it trotted straight over to me and started rubbing against my legs. That's not exactly feral behaviour. It had no collar, was pitifully thin and looked less than a year old. Anthony and I looked at each other and decided we really couldn't turn away an animal in such clear distress. So we fed it, put out some water and left it outside for the night, thinking there was a 50-50 chance it would be gone in the morning.

Our stray cat

The next morning we found it under Anthony's car, hiding from the birds in particular, and the world in general. We started looking around for the owner: the cat was very affectionate, always wanting to get up on our laps for cuddles, so it was clearly a pet. Sadly we thought as it had just outgrown kittenhood it had likely been dumped:( We put word out - if the owner didn't want it someone else might - and there was some interest, but not enough to come and get her. We called the rangers the following week but after lots of to and fro, and general shenanigans from the council, we ended up having to carry the poor animal in the car to the pound in Emerald, from where it should go to CQ Pet Rescue for re-homing.
