Brisbane Reflux

A lurgy shared is a lurgy doubled

Oct 14, 2017

I picked up a gastro bug in Brisbane and was very sick for a couple of days when I got home. Then Anthony caught it from me and was as sick as a dog for several days. The perils of the city.

A few days ago the apostle birds were very upset in the tree outside our kitchen window. They were scolding a bird I hadn't seen before. A photo taken through the shadecloth and leaves was scrutinised and we found a female eastern koel. We've been hearing koel calls both day and night since.

We've been woken at dawn by screeching outside our bedroom window. The spotted bowerbird has decided the mound under the tree and bougainvillea bush there is the perfect place to create a display ground. He's meticulously cleaned it of leaves until it's bare dirt, then he's gone around our gravel drive looking for the whitest, prettiest pebbles and brought them back to lay out just so. For variety he occasionally brings back a green pod.

Now he's displaying his prowess to the female. She stands behind the trunk of the bush while he prances around on the opposite side, strutting, holding pebbles in his beak, crouching down and hopping, and tossing bits and pieces he picks up. It's been absolutely fascinating and we regularly pop into the bedroom to watch during the day. I shot quite a bit of video, a short section of which should be visible here.
